FAQ

What is a snuffle mat?

A snuffle mat is an enrichment toy for dogs (and other pets!) that encourages their natural foraging behaviors.

How do you use a snuffle mat?

Place kibble or hard crunchy treats (nothing mushy or wet) into the snuffle mat and watch your dog do what they do best: sniff, sniff, sniff and snack, snack, snack! If your dog is new to snuffling, I recommend placing the food on top of the mat. As your pup gets the hang of it, you can gradually place the goodies deeper in the mat. We recommend supervising your snuffler and picking the mat up when they're finished.

Are your snuffle mats washable?

Snuffle mats are machine washable We recommend rolling it up and tying it with a piece of twine/string etc. to protect your washer and open up the fleece for a deep clean. Wash on the gentle/delicate cycle with mild detergent and cold water. Never use bleach. Mats can be air dried or dried in the dryer on the lowest settings.

My dog destroys toys, will they destroy a snuffle mat?

We can't guarantee they won't, but we have found that most dogs are more interested in eating the food than the fleece. Starting slow with the food on top the first few times they snuffle and gradually putting it deeper into the mat as they get the hang of it can be helpful. We also recommend supervised snuffling and picking the mat up when they’re finished.

My dog Reuben only interacted with toys by destroying them. “Indestructible” toys were destroyed in 2 minutes. He had his snuffle mat for years and never tried to even nibble it (and I was even naughty and left it out at all times).

When should I use a snuffle mat?

You can use your snuffle mat:

- For meal time (if your dog eats kibble) to give them added mental stimulation. Have a dog that wolfs down their food? Eating from their snuffle mat will help them hit the brakes!

- On days when the weather is just not cooperating and there's a minimal opportunity for outdoor exercise.

- If your dog is stressed in new or specific environments (like the vet), bring that snuffle mat along and allow your dog to snuffle to help them adjust and relax in that environment.

- If your dog is recovering from a surgery/injury and is on restricted exercise.

- When you need a little "me time" - give them an appropriate activity to do so they don't find an inappropriate one on their own!

- Whenever you like! Dogs can always benefit from participating in foraging activities.

What is biothane?

Biothane is PVC coated polyester webbing. It has a leather-like feel but is far more durable than leather. The coating makes it waterproof and stink-proof and it's a breeze to clean by wiping it down with a damp cloth or giving it a quick bath in soap and water.
